What is the race at Work Charter?
The Race at Work Charter requires signatories to make five commitments: Appoint an executive sponsor for race. Capture ethnicity data and publicise progress. Commit at board level to zero tolerance of harassment.
An independent review by Baroness McGregor-Smith considers the issues affecting black and minority ethnic (BME) groups in the workplace. It sets out recommendations for employers in the public and private sectors to improve diversity within their organisations.
The ethnicity pay gap shows the difference in the average pay between staff from ethnic minority backgrounds in a workforce, compared to 'White' staff. Where there is a positive percentage, this means that the average pay of a White member of staff is higher than that of a member of staff from an ethnic minority group.
3. BAME and BME. We do not use the terms BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) and BME (black and minority ethnic) because they emphasise certain ethnic minority groups (Asian and black) and exclude others (mixed, other and white ethnic minority groups).

The Parker Review is an independent review led by Sir John Parker, which considers how to improve the ethnic and cultural diversity of UK boards to better reflect their employee base and the communities they serve.
'Prioritised ethnicity' means that we allocate people to a single ethnic group in an order of priority, even if they identify with more than one ethnicity. The priority used by MSD is Māori, Pacific Peoples, NZ European and Other. For example, if someone identifies as Māori and Tongan, they're reported as Māori only.
Do ethnic minorities earn less?
The gap varied by ethnic group but we found that ethnic minority employees earned less than white co-workers across all main ethnic groups.
Across various levels of education, a significant black–white wage gap remains. Even black workers with an advanced degree experience a significant wage gap compared with their white counterparts. What is my race if I am Hispanic?
People who identify themselves as Spanish, Hispanic or Latino may be of any race. Hispanic or Latino refers to people whose ancestors or descendants originated in Central and South America and in the Caribbean, who follow the customs and cultures of these areas and who may speak Spanish.
Employers can ask applicants if they need any reasonable adjustments for the application process or interview. Note that employers cannot ask candidates questions about adjustments they would need in post until after they have made a job offer.
